Version Tracker Joy

Lookin Out

http://www.versiontracker.com get to know it and get to love it. As I body board the deep sea of the internet, there are certain sites that grab my attention: Sites that are well designed, sites that provide useful services, and sites that provide nifty free things. Version Tracker does a great job at all 3.

As one might expect from the name, Version Tracker points to software and keeps its repository up to date on version updates. The software provided ranges from commercial program updates, to shareware, to freeware, and even beta programs. It offers a community that reviews the software and ranks it.

While this service is great for nabbing updates from alternate sources, say if the normal provider’s page is completely stuffed up or a broken link exists between you and your precious data, I use it with another motive in mind. Version Tracker is simply the best repository for freeware and shareware out there for Mac and it’s not bad for PC eaither. These apps run from the “how did I live without it,” to the utterly pointless. Since it updates all the time, its a great place to look to see what new functionality you can slap on to your computer when your bored.

Some useful apps I’ve picked up are Ruler, which puts rulers on the sides of your monitors and lets you take down guides to measure objects on your screen exactly, and even measure their hex color or take screenshots. Another one is bgscreensaver, a more pointless app that reliably puts a screensaver as your desktop, a good way to get oohs and aahs from your friends. This combined with geekbind that lets you make windows transparent can add a whole new look to that annoying brushed steel look that Apple has locked itself in on.

If your looking for a cheap or free application, eaither to do a specific job like convert video formats or chart weather patterns, or are bored and want to find some new toys to play with, Version Tracker is your place.
