RSS of Despair

It seemed like only the beginning of the semester that I didn’t know a lick of AS3. Now that I’m at the end of it, I’ve put together three projects, two of which are already under my belt, and I have another on the way.

The first project was an RSS reader, codenamed as “RSS of Despair”. This will be hosted in my gallery as soon as I get a web version made up. The RSS feed pulled from Yahoo Pipes only the most saddening and woeful stories from various news feeds, and ordered them in rank from how often they appeared. The data would then get pumped into the .swf which would determine the size and opacity of the story by how high it ranked on the list.

The project was part of The Oresteia, a senior project for the Multimedia majors where we grouped up with theatre and presented a “Post modernistic deconstructive approach” to the ancient greek tragedy. At the end of the play, this .swf would be projected out onto the stage.

The web version, to be released soon, will include hyperlinks on each story that can take the user back to the website of origin.

Also, the code, .swf, and .fla of this project will be made available here as a tutorial since I found that RSS readers in AS3 do exist, but are often locked down and complex with little explanation.
